Pink Lady's Slipper

Prince Edward Island’s provincial flower is the the pink lady’s slipper. It is also called the moccasin plant. There are many species of lady’s slippers in Canada. They all have flowers that look like a bit like a slipper.

It is a small plant with only two leaves and one pink flower. It usually grows in forests. This plant is becoming rare. It is harder to find them. They take a long time to grow and they only grow in certain places. They only grow where there is a special fungus in the soil. This fungus provides food for the seeds of the lady slipper plant. If the fungus is not there, the seed will not grow. The seed grows slowly and it can take two or three years for a new plant to grow. Because they are becoming rare, in many places it is illegal to pick them.

PEI Potatoes

PEI has lots of potatoes and many potato fields! Potatoes have been an important crop on the island for a long time! Farmers have been growing potatoes in PEI since 1771. They have been exporting their potatoes to other countries since the early 1800’s. Today one third of Canada’s potatoes are grown in PEI - about 1.3 billion kilograms a year! About half of PEI’s potatoes are processed. They are made into foods such as frozen french fries or potato chips.

Have you ever bought a potato that started growing roots before you ate it? The new roots of a potato are called eyes. The eyes are an important part of seed potatoes. Seed potatoes are small potatoes, or pieces of potato, that get planted in the ground. They grow into new potato plants. Prince Edward Island exports seed potatoes to other parts of Canada and to other countries.
