The bones from a leg of a dinosaur, Royal Tyrrell museum.

 Dinosaurs in Alberta

There is a park in southern Alberta called Dinosaur Provincial Park. The park is located in the Red Deer River valley. This park is well known because it has a lot of dinosaur bones and fossils. Forty different dinosaur species have been discovered there. Fossils and bones from many other different kinds of plants and animals have been found there too, including sharks and crocodiles! The bones from more than 500 dinosaurs have been taken from the park. The bones and fossils from Dinosaur Provincial Park can be seen in museums around the world. Some of them can be seen at the Royal Tyrrell Museum of paleontology in Drumheller Alberta, the nearest town to Dinosaur Provincial Park. Paleontology is the study of prehistoric life.

The town of Drumheller calls itself the Dinosaur Capital of the World. Drumheller is also home of the world’s largest dinosaur. She is made of steel and is 86 feet tall and 150 feet long. She is four times the size of a real Tyrannosaurus rex, one of the largest dinosaurs that we know of. The skull of a real Tyrannosaurus rex was 5 feet (1.5m) long! You can climb inside this dinosaur. From her open mouth you can look at the view of the scenery around Drumheller.

 Postcard from Banff

August, 2010.

Dear Mom and Dad:  Hi!

Banff is great! We arrived safely in Calgary on Wednesday. It took about two hours to drive to Banff  from Calgary but there was lots of great scenery to look at. Calgary is in a part of Alberta that is very flat so the first part of the drive wasn’t very interesting. Once we were in the mountains everything was beautiful! This morning was clear and sunny day so we rode the gondola up Sulphur Mountain and had lunch up there. The view of the Rocky Mountains, the Bow River and the town of Banff was very pretty. Yesterday we hiked through pine forest to Boom Lake. The lake is fed by a glacier so the water was cold! Tomorrow we are going horseback riding! We are having a great time!

P.S. Although the picture on this card shows the Banff Springs Hotel, we aren’t staying there! We are staying at a nice little hotel in Banff instead
